Introducing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for healthcare professionals: the importance of a basic theoretical course

چکیده
Methods A basic six-hour theoretical course on ECMO was taught to a heterogeneous audience formed by 12 medical students, 10 nurses, 4 perfusionists and 4 physicians. Content included the following topics: 1) concept of ECMO; 2) usage scenarios; 3) aspects of the circuit; 4) differences between pulmonary and cardiac ECMO; 5) management of patients on ECMO; 6) aspects of cannulation; 7) complications; 8) concept of E-CPR; and 9) importance of the multidisciplinary team. Questionnaires for self-evaluation, graduating from 1 to 5 the level of expertise on the referred topics, were conducted immediately before and after the course.

“Awake” extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): pathophysiology, technical considerations, and clinical pioneering
Venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (vv-ECMO) has been classically employed as a rescue therapy for patients with respiratory failure not treatable with conventional mechanical ventilation alone. In recent years, however, the timing of ECMO initiation has been readdressed and ECMO is often started earlier in the time course of respiratory failure. Furthermore, some centers are starti...
متن کاملExtracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for ARDS: National Trends in the United States 2008-2012.
INTRODUCTION Recent advances in technology and protocols have made the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) a viable rescue therapy for patients with ARDS who present with refractory hypoxemia. Despite the lack of strong evidence supporting the use of ECMO in ARDS, its use seems to be increasing. We sought to determine recent trends in the use of ECMO for ARDS. We also assessed tre...
متن کاملThe use of continuous renal replacement therapy in series with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
A large percentage of patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) require continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) usually performed through a different venous access or by introducing a filter into the ECMO circuit. Here, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of including a CRRT machine in the circuit by connecting its inlet line after the centrifugal pump and its outlet line befo...
متن کاملExtracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation as a Bridge through Chemotherapy in B-Cell Lymphoma.
A 41-year-old female presented with a large anterior mediastinal mass adjacent to the heart. Biopsy demonstrated lymphoma. Upon administration of chemotherapy, she developed cardiogenic shock requiring a 5-day course of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a bridge through her treatment. After one cycle of chemotherapy, ECMO was discontinued and the patient completed her course of chem...
متن کاملCerebral aspects of neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a review.
BACKGROUND Neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving therapeutic approach in newborns suffering from severe, but potentially reversible, respiratory insufficiency, mostly complicated by neonatal persistent pulmonary hypertension. However, cerebral damage, intracerebral hemorrhage as well as ischemia belong to the most devastating complications of ECMO. OBJECTIVES The...
